Now I See You, Now I Don't

It's a curious thing. Sitting at my desk this afternoon, working on this Sunday's Groundbreaking Ceremony, I hear all kinds of sounds coming from the connector wing. Asbestco is still working on the asbestos, so the wing is completely closed off to regular foot traffic. (Sorry to those of you who are frustrated that you can't walk through the wing to the Sanctuary! Such is progress...)

My office window is open, so I hear the rather loud whirrrrrrr of the fans doing their ventilation thing. (Linda and I think it sounds like rain much of the time.) I hear hammers hitting I-don't-know-what, and I hear men talking in muffled yet pointed conversation. I could have sworn I heard someone say "I think we've almost got 'er!" That was four hours ago...I guess almost can take a while. And, of course, it depends on what they "almost got".

I don't mind the sounds. In fact, I rather enjoy them. The sounds tell me several things:
  1. People are in the building. Whenever people are in church, I know good stuff is happening. A quiet church can be a less-than-active church;
  2. We're that much closer to the actual demolition of the connector wing, which is the first big piece of the construction puzzle;
  3. God has a purpose for WPC, and these interesting sounds are part of God's greater purpose. So are the men making them.
There's one thing, though, that's a little disconcerting. I can hear the sounds, and that's OK. But I can't see the people who are making the sounds! They're holed up in the square footage of the connector wing, all day long, day after day. They're usually working before I arrive at the office, and sometimes they're here after I've left.  On one occasion they and I left the building at the same time. It was good to see these men in the flesh and blood, to know for sure that they exist. Because, as I said, all I really do is hear them.

I'm looking forward to Sunday's Groundbreaking Ceremony, where we'll get to actually see some of the people who represent these men who have worked so well in our facility. It's neat to hear them; it will be be nice to see them, too.

No pictures today. Just listen for the sounds........
